How to Layer Gemstone Pendants: A Simple Style Guide

Layering necklaces is one of the easiest ways to elevate any outfit — and gemstone pendants are perfect for it. Whether you're new to layering or just looking for fresh ideas, here's how to do it well.

Start with Different Chain Lengths

The key to a great layered look is variation in length. A good starting point:

  • 16"-18" — sits near the collarbone (choker to collarbone length)
  • 20"-22" — falls just below the collarbone
  • 24"+ — drops to the chest or sternum

Most of our pendants come with an 18" chain, which is a great base layer. Add a shorter or longer chain with a second pendant to create depth.

Mix Stone Colors Intentionally

You don't need to match perfectly — but some combinations work better than others:

  • Lapis lazuli + amethyst — deep blue and purple are analogous colors that feel rich and cohesive
  • Amethyst + carnelian — purple and warm orange are complementary colors that create a bold contrast
  • Quantum Quattro + lapis — both blue-toned stones with different textures create an interesting tonal layer

Vary the Pendant Size

Avoid layering two large pendants — they'll compete for attention. Instead, pair a bold statement piece (like a 34ct lapis pendant) with a smaller, simpler stone on a shorter chain. Let one piece lead and the other support.

Keep the Metal Consistent

Mixing metals can work, but for a clean, cohesive look — especially with natural gemstones — stick to one metal. All of our pieces are set in sterling silver, so they layer together seamlessly.

Wear It Your Way

There are no strict rules. The best layered look is one that feels like you. Start with one pendant you love, add a second that complements it, and see how it feels. Natural gemstones have an organic quality that makes them surprisingly easy to mix.
